Meet Cheesy. Cheesy is between 5 and 6 years old. His exact age is unknown as he was rescued as a stray from the streets of South Boston. Cheesy was picked up by a trap and vaccinate and fix and release program for wild and feral cats. Cheesy is FIV+, and as I am not well versed in cats I looked this up. FIV+ means feline immunodeficiency virus. According to the ASPCA website "Although the virus is slow-acting, a cat’s immune system is severely weakened once the disease takes hold. This makes the cat susceptible to various secondary infections. Infected cats who receive supportive medical care and are kept in a stress-free, indoor environment can live relatively comfortable lives for months to years before the disease reaches its chronic stages."
With FIV it takes cats longer to heal, but since he was so sweet and good natured they decided to put Cheesy up for adoption. On top of the FIV, the black spots you see on Cheesy's ears and nose are from frostbite. It's hard to imagine this beautiful cat sick, shivering, and cold all on his own, so I'm so happy Stefa adopted him in July of 2014, as she is a most caring cat mommy!
Stefa reports that Cheesy's first night home he hid underneath their bathtub. After that he spent a few weeks hiding behind chairs and couches. In her own words, "He's come from being a skittish and high strong animal to being firmly control of the household."
Over time he's slowly come out of his shell and is now a very spoiled house kitty. He tends to mew at everyone for attention, wakes Stefa up at dawn to be fed, has his very own napping couch, sleeps in bed with Stefa every night, and has a very dedicated following on Twitter.
Cheesy does not like to play, nor does he like catnip or treats- he's perfectly content napping, eating his regular food, or being lovingly pet.
Cheesy had a benign tumor removed and was stuck in a cone to keep from scratching or licking at his wounds. Stefa wanted to give Cheesy a break from the cone so she decided to put him in a little green sweater (which appears in these photos below) that a friend of hers knit for him. After that, Stefa found that Cheesy didn't seem to mind being dressed in outfits so he now has a very fashionable and extensive wardrobe.
Stefa really stressed to me that she wants people to know that though puppies and kittens get a lot of love and are adopted much quicker, adult animals in shelters make fantastic pets and deserve loving homes, too. Cheesy was an adult at the time he was adopted of course, and even though he is FIV+ and a little older, neither of those things impact his quality of life, or his ability to be the best kitty ever.
